DSW mobilises Kenyans for national VCT week

More than 98,000 Kenyans – many of whom are young people – took part in the country's counselling and testing week, which was piloted in Nairobi, Coastal and Nyanza districts to mark World AIDS Day 2007. Credit for this overwhelming success has been given to DSW and other key stakeholders for their extensive mobilisation activities carried out in all three regions. By promoting the "Know Your Status" call in its youth-friendly mobile voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) project, DSW was on the forefront in supporting the Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise campaign.

Open House Day at DSW Uganda

More than 150 young people, stakeholders and policy-makers followed DSW's invitation to visit its premises in Kampala on 26th October. The second ever "Open House Day" created an open environment for discussions on adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) issues in the run-up to the Commonwealth Youth Forum. Discussions led to a final declaration, which explicitly makes adolescent SRH a priority for this forum, which will be hosted by DSW Uganda in November. The Open House Day was rated as success by numerous high-level representatives, including the German Ambassador.

HIV testing at night: DSW Kenya moonlight session

Hundreds of clients thronged a night voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) centre organised by DSW in Embu Town, Eastern region. Dubbed "moonlight", the centre catered for those clients who fear to visit a testing facility during the day – young people, commercial sex workers, taxi drivers. Following two busy nights of service, 300 visitors knew their HIV status and were provided with free treatment for sexually transmitted diseases and HIV-related illness. Clients expressed their gratitude for being able to access these vital services under the cover of darkness.
