Preparations and Roll Out of National Youth Week in Kenya

DSW Kenya, as a key implementing partner with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, participated in the preparatory activities for a campaign to mark the International Youth Day. In collaboration with the ministry DSW provided technical and financial resources to the celebration of the international youth day in Eastern, Western and Coast region in order to increase the level of awareness on HIV and pertinent sexual and reproductive health issues among young people.

These activities included adolescent sexual and reproductive health modelling activities, provision of HIV and sexual and reproductive health services in integrated health camps, distribution of condoms, and behaviour change communication materials.

Sensitization Seminars for Community Leaders in Tanzania

As an entry point, DSW conducted sensitization seminars to community leaders and other gate keepers on the project 'Addressing Sexual and Reproductive Health of Female Youth Working in Informal Sector', funded by the European Commission. In the seminars DSW staff learnt that besides the beneficiaries, most community leaders also have inadequate knowledge of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and employment policies.

Similarly the events revealed potential institutions for future collaboration, such as Minnesota International Volunteers and Foundation of Africa Medicine and Education especially in offering youth friendly SRH services.

World Contraception Day in Kenya and Uganda

To mark the World Contraception Day 2008, DSW also undertook a number of activities in Kenya and Uganda. The highlight was the participation at the grand event in Nairobi, where DSW youth clubs members on board a caravan equipped with a music system moved around the Nairobi Slums and informed over 20,000 people on the importance of contraceptives and reproductive health. In Uganda, DSW together with the All Stars Football Academy, a talent development facility, celebrated the 2008 World Contraception Day in Kampala. Activities were a public dialogue with women parliamentarians and students, a youth club drama competition, and demonstration of contraception methods.

The highlight of the event was a girl’s football match after which information and consultation about family planning and contraception methods were offered.
